Encrypting API Keys

We have a requirement to encrypt an api key. We currently store it in DSS. Two questions

 

1. Is DSS the best location for an item like a API key

2. What is the best way to encrypt - I would prefer not to BYOK. So is something like keyring w/ prconfig a good way?
