work status update trigger

Let's consider I have a build a case type. During the process of case life cycle, I have set the status for a particular process step as "Pending for approval". Now my question, when this status will be active? Is it before or after the process token reaches the step?

if you are setting the status of the case at any point of time in the process flow the moment the process/execution reaches that step Status will be updated with given wording but this will be visible to user on the screen only when the execution reaches an assignment. The process will set the status the moment it reaches the step/stage/utility/rule, you can see this by tracing
