Pega Web Mashup (IAC) and browser back/forward navigation button behavior

Let's say I have a website that contains a Pega7 app using mashup (fka IAC).

Within the mashup, I click on links that navigate throughout my Pega7 app (opening assignments, cases etc.).  I then click on a link that brings me to a different page in my containing website that has nothing to do with my Pega app.  I would like to click "back" in my browser to go back to the last screen i was looking at in my Pega app.  Instead, it always reloads the mashup to the starting UI.  How can i accomplish smooth back/forward navigation between the the pega app and the containing site?
