Do we need to generate and apply DDL manually for single schema upgrade using command line for Pega 7.2?
We are doing Single Schema upgrade using command line option as mentioned in page 35 of https://pdn.pega.com/documents/pega-72-platform-upgrade-guide. Step#3 on page 35 mentions that generating and updating DDL is optional. Step#4 is the upgrade step (i.e. running upgrade.sh). I want to know if generating and applying DDL is done automatically as a part of upgrade.sh or we need to generate and apply DDL manually before running upgrade.sh.
In other words, I want to know what is the need of generating and applying DDL and is it mandatory for Single Schema upgrade using command line.

By default, the upgrade.sh script automatically generates and applies the DDL to your database. The setupDatabase.properties file passes information to the upgrade script. In the setupDatabase.properties file, ensure that the following properties remain at their default settings:
- bypass.pega.schema=false
- bypass.udf.generation=false
Then, when you run the upgrade.sh script, the system automatically generates and applies the DDL.

On page#32 in the pega 7.2 upgrade document, generate DDL steps are mentioned as optional. I want to know under what conditions we run them manually.
Is it when the automated script fails?

Some organizations do not grant certain privileges to the deployment user due to their security policy. This is the primary reason behind the manual approach.
Assuming we have created a deployment user as mentioned in the 7.2.0 upgrade guide; now verify if the deployment user has all the required privileges and role.
In oracle we use the following SQL to perform this verification ...
Select privilege from dba_sys_privs where Grantee='schema-name’ order by 1;
AUTOMATIC
Deployment user has "all the privileges and role" listed in the upgrade guide. Creation & application of DDLs are taken care by the scripts automatically.
MANUAL
Deployment user does not have "some/all of the privileges and role" listed in the upgrade guide.
We have to create & apply DDLs manually by leveraging generateddl.sh
